Being a witness is based on first-hand personal experience. Pastor Wayne Cordiero puts it this way:
Only I can keep myself spiritually healthy by feeding myself. No one can do it for me by proxy.
To be a witness for Christ means being someone who walks in the way of Jesus, and so can speak naturally and honsetly about life with Him. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live everyday life in Christ. Our witness is the overflow of a life filled with the Spirit.
