The Holy Spirit empowers us to live life as God intends, to come alive as truly human beings in our everyday lives:
Read John 14:15-31.
- How would you characterize Jesus’ relationship with the Father?
- Rob Bell says of Jesus, “His inner life was thoroughly saturated with the love of God.” What would it look like for your inner life to be thoroughly saturated with the love of God by the power of the Holy Spirit? What change would that require from you?
- As we learned together last week, the movement in Genesis 1 is always towards life, creation, goodness — a reflection of God’s heart. How can you experience the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your inner life that points you towards life, creation, goodness?
Jesus calls the Holy Spirit our “Advocate” — from Greek, that word translates to, “the One who is called alongside.”
If you’re trying to teach others how to do something, they will never learn if you always do it for them. Sometimes, the best way to empower someone to learn is by teaching them, and then encouraging them to go out and try it for themselves. In this passage, Jesus tells His disciples that He is leaving, but they will be empowered by the Holy Spirit who is called alongside us.
- Is there something you feel called to do right now that you need the Holy Spirit’s empowerment and guidance to do?
- Who are two or three people you can ask to pray for you and partner with you in answering this calling in your everyday life?
